The Pelicans are inching closer to having a new head coach.

ESPN reported Tuesday that Phoenix Suns assistant Willie Green is close to a deal with the Pels for the lead coaching position.

Green, who is a 12-year NBA veteran, has been an assistant with the Suns for the past two seasons and spent the previous three seasons on the Golden State Warriors' coaching staff.

He also played one season for New Orleans in 2010, when they were still the Hornets.

If given the position, Green would replace Stan Van Gundy, who left the Pelicans after just one season.
