A new study by the Metropolitan Crime Commission says violent crimes in New Orleans are up by almost 50% in the first half of 2021.

The data released yesterday showed a rise in homicides, non-fatal shootings, carjackings, and armed robberies over the same period in 2020.

Carjackings saw the biggest spike with an increase of over 100% compared to last year, while homicides are up by 27%.

Crime commission president Rafael Goyeneche says to reduce those numbers, the NOPD must change to tactics that proactively seek out criminal activity.
