Jefferson Parish leaders are warning residents that the surge in COVID-19 cases is due to low vaccination rates in the parish.

Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng said yesterday that the parish is seeing its highest number of cases since January.

The Louisiana Department of Health says Jefferson Parish is currently averaging just under 300 new cases per day.

Officials say only 48% of the parish's population is fully vaccinated.
