New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced Friday that an indoor mask mandate was now in effect, regardless of a person's vaccination status.

Cantrell issued the mandate in response to the quickly spreading delta variant of COVID-19, which is fueling a fourth surge of the coronavirus in Louisiana.

Gov. John Bel Edwards stopped short of issuing a statewide indoor mask mandate Friday, but told reporters he is considering one.

The Mayor also announced that all city employees and contractors will be required to get one of the available COVID-19 vaccines.
