The total number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in Louisiana rose to 2,112 Tuesday, setting a new record high.

The previous record was set on January 7 with 2,069.

There were just 259 patients hospitalized statewide at the start of July.

The Louisiana Department of Health said that 89% of current COVID hospitalizations are those not fully vaccinated.

LDH reported 4,725 new cases on Tuesday with 59 additional deaths for a total of 11,085 since the pandemic began.

In light of Louisiana's 4th COVID surge fueled by the delta variant, Gov. John Bel Edwards has announced a indoor mask mandate would be in effect statewide starting on Wednesday.

More information is available on the department's COVID-19 dashboard.
