NOLA City Council Pardons Thousands Cited For Marijuana Possession

New Orleans City Council is issuing a pardon for thousands of residents cited for marijuana possession.

Council President Helena Moreno announced yesterday that 10,000 convictions and pending cases for small amounts of cannabis possession received the pardon.

Council members said the move was made to build trust between the NOPD and the community and free up officers to target violent criminals around the city.

Under the pardon, smoking cannabis is prohibited in public spaces, but offenders will now receive a ticket under the Smoke-Free Air Act.
