Legalized sports betting in Louisiana is one step closer to reality after a decision by the state Gaming Control Board.

At their meeting on Thursday, the Board approved emergency rules going into effect on Monday to allow Louisiana's casinos to develop their permanent plans for sportsbooks.

The measure brings hope to the state's gaming industry that legalized betting could begin before the college or professional football seasons start.

Gaming Control Board chairman Ronnie Johns said sports betting would bring revenue to local and state budgets plus more funding for childhood education.
