Ten-digit dialing will be mandatory for calls made within the Metro New Orleans area and parts of Southwest Louisiana starting next week.

The FCC announced the move due to the new National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline. The program implements a three-digit 988 suicide prevention hotline.

To help facilitate the program locally, the FCC is making any local callers use the 504 and 337 area codes when dialing.
