The New Orleans Police Department may be too short-handed lately to provide security for long parades and large events.

Eric Hessler, attorney for the Police Association of New Orleans, says not enough officers signed up to work details for the recent Krewe of Boo parade.

In response, organizers cut the Canal Street portion from the route, about a dozen blocks.

Hessler says there are about 1,000 NOPD officers, a critically low figure that could affect the coverage of large events in the city.
