New Orleans City Budget Discussions Are Underway

The New Orleans City Council is now holding budget hearings to discuss the mayor's proposed spending plan for the year ahead.

Mayor Latoya Cantrell has proposed a budget of more than $1 billion that includes $652 million from the city's general fund and millions in federal dollars.

Cantrell wants a capital budget of more than $1 million, a $9 million increase for the sanitation department, and almost $94 million for the New Orleans Police Department.

The City Council has until December 1 to pass a budget for next year.
