Some scientists at Tulane University are looking at recycled glass bottles as a means to fight land loss.

Franziska Trautmann is the cofounder of New Orleans's only glass recycling center, which turns glass bottles into sand. Her idea was to use the sand to rebuild the state's eroded coast.

Some chemists at Tulane are working with Trautmann, using grant money to conduct a feasibility study of using the glass sand to rebuild coastal habitats.
