New Orleans is experiencing a two-year surge in violent crime, as indicated by a rise in the number of murders.

With more than two weeks left in the year, the number of homicides in 2021 has already surpassed last year's tally.

There were 201 murders in New Orleans in 2020, and so far this year there are 204 as of Monday.

Other categories of violent crime are up sharply as well, especially shootings and carjackings.

The city's all-time highest number of murders in a year was 324, back in 1994.
