A levee protection project in the river parishes is getting the go-ahead from a court order that was issued on Monday.

A court challenge from some St. John Parish landowners had held up the expropriation process for the West Short project.

A panel of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a state court judge to sign the expropriation order by Thursday.

That clears the way for the Pontchartrain Levee District to move ahead with the 18 mile long project, which will provide levee protection to residents of St. John, St. James, and St. Charles parishes.

The project is expected to be done in about three years.
