State health officials say the omicron variant is now the dominant strain of coronavirus in Louisiana and the nation.

The state's numbers have more than doubled over the past week. The Louisiana Department of Health reported nearly 3,000 new cases of the virus on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

LDH says 80% of cases are among the unvaccinated, which means a fifth of the new cases are among vaccinated people.

Dr. Julio Figueroa of LSU Health says breakthrough cases happen because of low booster rates, the transmissibility of the omicron variant, and people who forget about social distancing and masks.
