Both U.S. senators from Louisiana are part of the GOP bloc that prevented the passage of a Democrat-backed election bill on Wednesday.

GOP Senators John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy voted against the bill, which would have created national standards for federal elections.

Early voting, voting by mail, and other matters that have been left to the states would have been nationalized.

After the bill failed, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer brought a proposal to change filibuster rules, but that measure was also defeated.
