Orleans Parish prosecutors are now pushing for higher bail for violent crime suspects.

District Attorney Jason Williams denied the higher bail requests are a change in policy, telling The Times-Picayune it's more to make sure people know violent crime won't be tolerated.

Williams says there are people who are distorting his office's record by inaccurately and unfairly blaming it for bonds.

Orleans Public Defenders Chief Derwyn Bunton criticized Williams saying he's going back on a campaign promise to reduce mass incarceration.
