Nicholls State University will be the first university in Louisiana to welcome pets in one of its residence halls.

University officials say students will be allowed to have pets in North Babington Hall starting in the fall semester this year.

Dr. Michele Caruso, vice president for student affairs, says Hurricane Ida boosted the idea, which had already been under consideration.

After the storm, displaced students and their families had to take their pets with them.

Nearly two-dozen dogs and cats temporarily lived on the Nicholls campus as a result.
