Some state lawmakers want to repeal a Louisiana law that prohibits sending 17-year-olds to adult prisons.

State Sen. Stewart Cathy, a Republican from Monroe, wants to reverse the state's Raise the Age Act in response to violent crime.

A spokesman for Louisiana Progress says sending teens to prison wouldn't help.

But Cathy says several district attorneys, sheriffs, and law enforcement departments say 17-year-olds are a leading part of the recent surge in crime.
