The New Orleans City Council is discussing ways to keep police officers on the force in order to deal with the city's ongoing spike in violent crime.

The Criminal Justice Committee met Tuesday with representatives of the police union about the NOPD's manpower crisis.

Union reps said officers leave NOPD mainly because of the pay and disciplinary actions by the Public Integrity Bureau.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell has proposed a $5,000 bonus for new recruits. The union prefers a two percent across-the-board annual raise.
