The New Orleans City Council votes today on Mayor LaToya Cantrell's plan to retain police officers through bonuses.

An officer would receive a $5,000 bonus for completing academy training, and another $5,000 for every five years of service.

The council will also vote on increasing the funding for the Police and Justice Foundation from $500,000 to $900,000 to enhance police recruiting in a competitive environment.

Police union officials say it's a good start, but more will need to be done to fight crime.
