The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says it's stepping up river patrols to deal with what's turning out to be a deadly year.
The agency reports 20 deaths on the water statewide, and the year is just a little more than half over.
Five of the deaths were in the Baton Rouge area.
Wildlife and Fisheries says most of these fatalities could have been prevented.
Boaters need to wear life jackets, require their family and friends to wear life jackets, and not drive a boat while drinking.
