A campaign aide for New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says the effort to recall the mayor is a "Republican-backed maneuver."
Tuesday's statement plays the race and gender cards, claiming without evidence that the recall targets Cantrell because she's the city's first black female mayor.
It claims a "conservative DC firm" is one of "many GOP organizations" that are involved, and says Fox News is complicit.
The statement was at first attributed to an unnamed "campaign spokesperson," but within the hour, a follow-up statement named the source as Maggie Carroll, Cantrell's campaign manager.
