Ian Takes Aim At Florida After Passing Over Western Cuba

The National Hurricane Center says that Hurricane Ian is moving toward Florida's west coast and is expected to pass the Florida Keys later today.

Ian is projected to hit the Gulf Coast side of Florida tomorrow into tomorrow evening, with the storm being an extremely dangerous major hurricane on approach.

NHC hurricane specialist Philippe Papin says Ian's path is taking it to a very storm surge prone part of the state, with the biggest threat extending from Tampa Bay to Fort Myers.

"There's going to also be significant wind impacts, and then the storm is not moving very fast to the north-northeast, and so there's also a significant heavy rainfall threat not just along the coast but also well-inland for the peninsula," Papin added.

Parts of the Tampa area could see up to 20 inches of rain and central Florida could see up to 15 inches through Sunday, with parts of south Florida possibly seeing up to six inches.
