The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating whether criminal activity caused an oil spill at an Entergy substation in Chalmette.

An Entergy spokesperson said valves to two oil-filled transformers were removed a day or two before the leak was discovered on Sunday.

About 20,000 gallons of oil leaked into a nearby waterway and the marsh of Bayou Bienvenue.

Entergy says the oil sheen is contained in a floating containment boom.

The company says the substation was de-energized after a tornado hit the area in March.
