The New Orleans Police Department says it has cleared less than 43 percent of its more than 220 homicide cases so far this year.

That means almost six out of ten New Orleans homicide cases are still uncleared.

A case is solved when a suspect is identified and an arrest warrant is obtained. But a case isn't cleared until the suspect is arrested or is confirmed dead.

The FBI says the national average for homicide clearances last year was nearly 48 percent.
