The New Orleans City Council is taking steps to make sure a national search for a new police chief takes place.
After Mayor LaToya Cantrell named Michelle Woodfork as the city's interim police chief, she said she was "abandoning" a national search for a permanent replacement, preferring to focus on "leadership from within."
In response, all seven City Council members signed a letter to the Police Executive Research Forum, which helps cities nationwide to search for candidates for executive leadership roles.
