The federal government is accusing the State of Louisiana of keeping people in custody after they should be released.
The U.S. Justice Department says there is reasonable cause to believe that the Louisiana Department of Corrections routinely violates inmates' 14th Amendment rights by holding them behind bars after the dates they are entitled to leave incarceration.
Officials say more than 26 percent of Louisiana inmates were held past their release dates over a four-month period last year, with 24 percent of them being kept in jail for at least an extra 90 days.
According to the DOJ, LDOC has failed to ensure that inmates are released in a timely manner for over ten years.
