A spokesman for New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is trying to explain why she was caught on camera making an obscene gesture at the riders of a Carnival parade float over the weekend.
Cantrell's Communications Director Gregory Joseph issued a statement last night that tried to make light of the incident in terms of "satire and jest."
The cellphone video was recorded on Saturday as the Krewe of Tucks passed the mayor's official parade stands outside Gallier Hall.
By Sunday, the video had gone viral on social media.
