New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell will not face a recall election.

Gov. John Bel Edwards says the petition to recall Cantrell fell about 20,000 valid signatures short of the threshold needed to trigger an election.

The governor noted that there were more than 67,000 signatures on the petition, but almost 40,000 of them were rejected.

About 6,000 of the rejected signatures were either duplicates or from out-of-parish voters, while the others were tossed out for reasons including the date of the signature and using profanity.

Cantrell's campaign manager said the recall attempt was "divisive and dishonest" and said it's time for New Orleanians to come together.
