State legislators may soon consider a proposal from a Crowley Republican that would impose tougher sentences on fentanyl dealers.

Rep. John Stefanski's proposed bill would mean longer prison terms for dealers and manufacturers who possess more than 28 grams of fentanyl.

He says he's basing his bill on Louisiana's life sentence for heroin distribution.

Stefanski says his bill would target dealers, not users, and that 28 grams of fentanyl is enough to kill thousands of people.

The 2023 legislative session starts next month.
