A state representative says members of the Louisiana state legislature should get a huge pay raise.

Joe Marino, an Independent from Gretna, has filed a bill to increase the salary of senators and representatives from $16,800 a year to $60,000.

Marino isn't seeking re-election, so the pay increase wouldn't affect him.

He believes that without the pay raise, only retirees and rich people will run for office.

It would be the first pay hike for state lawmakers in more than 40 years.
