The Louisiana legislature is considering a bill that would require minimum six-figure bonds for people arrested for violent crimes.

The proposed law would require a bond of at least $100,000 for crimes of violence, and at least $500,000 if the defendant had a gun during the crime.

Some district attorneys say it's a good way to keep dangerous suspects off the streets. But some public defenders say innocent people unable to pay a six-figure bond will be stuck in jail.

The bill would require judges who set a bond below the minimum to provide written reasons for doing so.
