In his final State of the State address, Gov. John Bel Edwards called on lawmakers to end the dealth penalty in Louisiana.
"It is wholly inconsistent with Louisiana's pro-life values, as it quite literally by its definition promotes a culture of death," Edwards said.
The Governor urged legislators to pass legislation ending the death penalty, calling it expensive and not a deterrent to crime.
He added that only one death row inmate has been executed in Louisiana in the past twenty years.
Edwards' other top priorities for the legislative session which began on Monday include a $3,000 pay raise for teachers and legislation for paid family and medical leave.
