The St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office says a skull fragment found in Lake Pontchartrain in 1985 is now known to be prehistoric.

The skull was identified as coming from a woman 25 to 35 years old, but DNA analysis in 2009 was unable to reveal more than that.

Florida-based Beta Analytics recently conducted carbon-14 testing that showed the fragment to be about 3500 years old.

The bone will remain in the custody of the LSU FACES lab under the protection of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
