The House Education Committee is supporting a bill that requires Louisiana high-schoolers to pass a course in financial literacy in order to graduate.

State Treasurer John Schroder and Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley are both in favor.

Schroder says more than half of Louisiana residents have a net worth of zero.

Brumley says parents worry that their kids don't understand things like checking accounts, contracts, or insurance.

GOP Rep. Nicholas Muscarello, who wrote the bill, says Louisiana is "50th in the nation" in this area of education.
