Louisiana State Treasurer John Schroder says somebody recently cashed in an unexpected treasure found in an old safe deposit box.

Schroder says some bearer bonds were in a safe deposit box from Whitney Bank in New Orleans, which was flooded by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The owner put them into a plastic bin and placed them in the attic. After his death, the bonds were listed as unclaimed property until the owner's heir was found.

The Treasury Department paid the heir more than $250,000 for the bonds.
