The state legislature is considering a bill that would prevent the shutdown of Louisiana churches during a public health emergency.

Republican Sen. Beth Mizell of Franklinton says churches were the last public places that were allowed to reopen during the pandemic.

A bipartisan panel of lawmakers unanimously approved the proposed bill.

If the full legislature passes the bill, the voters will consider it as a constitutional amendment. If citizens approve of it, the governor will have no power to veto it.
