The Jefferson Parish Council will vote today on a proposal to change or eliminate six bus routes.

The parish Transit Department suggested the move as a way to cut costs on bus routes with low ridership.

Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng says the parish will have a deficit of nearly $28 million by 2029 unless some changes are made.

Sheng says bus fares don't pay anywhere near enough to run the transit system, which is largely subsidized by the federal government.
