Several people and pets are safe after a passerby helped the Kenner Fire Department rescue them from a burning house on Tuesday morning.

Fire crews responded around 11 a.m. to the fire at a single-story home on Reverend Richard Wilson Drive that served as a neighborhood daycare.

Jonathan McCray was driving past at the time and saw smoke.

McCray pulled over, ran to the house, and helped several people and dogs get out safely.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. One firefighter was hospitalized for a heat-related illness.
