A federal grant of nearly half a million dollars will pay for a public air monitor in St. James Parish.

The funds will come as a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

The state and federal agencies held a press conference on Monday to announce the grant.

The air monitor will be situated on the west bank of St. James Parish, in the heart of "Cancer Alley."

Advocates blame the area's elevated cancer risk on toxic airborne releases from local petrochemical plants.
