The Louisiana Attorney General's office says coroners in Louisiana shouldn't be charging families or funeral homes for cremation permits.

Some coroner's offices have made it a common practice to charge for the permits.

For example, the Livingston Parish coroner has been charging a fee of $100 for each permit.

Monday's opinion says state law doesn't authorize coroners to seek compensation for issuing the permits.
