Congressman Clay Higgins is asking the federal government for its help supporting the struggling Louisiana shrimping industry.

The Port Barre Republican has requested the Department of Agriculture to buy Gulf shrimp to help offset the effect of shrimp imports.

An estimated nine out of ten shrimp consumed in the U.S. are imported.

LSU Sea Grant Agent Kevin Savoie says nearly a third of imported shrimp test positive for illegal additives, and aren't subject to the same rigorous inspection standards as shrimp from American producers.
