The Senate Health & Welfare Committee plans to urge Gov. John Bel Edwards to veto the state budget.

The problem is a $100 million funding cut for the Louisiana Department of Health.

LDH Secretary Stephen Russo told committee members on Tuesday that the cut is larger than it sounds, since state funds are usually matched by federal dollars.

Edwards is in France for an economic development trip, but the committee will urge him to veto the budget when he returns.

Edwards could use a line-item veto to avoid a special session.
