Steel shutters are being installed over the windows of the abandoned Lindy Boggs Medical Center in Mid City.
New Orleans police did a floor-by-floor sweep of the building on Tuesday morning to make sure there were no squatters inside before contractors started blocking the windows.
The Mid City Neighborhood Association has been asking the property owners to block the windows to prevent break-ins.
The property has been a nuisance ever since it was abandoned after Hurricane Katrina.
City leaders say it may be demolished if the owners can't finish their plan to turn the hospital into a retirement facility.
