St. Tammany Parish is moving ahead with a reef project that will protect a long stretch of the Lake Pontchartrain shoreline.
The $40 million artificial reef will be a breakwater about 400 feet off the last docks, and will feature breaks based on Coast Guard requirements.
The parish council has already given the go-ahead to reefs near Lakeshore Villages, Carr Drive, and Lake Drive.
In addition, the council recently allocated $345,000 to study the construction of a reef further west, near Big Branch Marsh in Lacombe.
