Eight people with ties to Louisiana are under consideration to be canonized as saints in the Catholic Church.

They include five priests from the Diocese of Shreveport who died during an outbreak of yellow fever.

The Diocese of Alexandria has a candidate named Charlene Richard [[ REE-shard ]], a little girl who died of leukemia.

The last two are from the Diocese of Lafayette.

Father Verbis Lafleur died while trying to save prisoners of war at sea, and Auguste Pelefigue was a man of faith who lived a long and humble life.
