Contractors are ready to roll in a project to build freshwater pipelines on both banks of the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish.

Public Works only needs the go-ahead from the Army Corps of Engineers to start the project as soon as today.

A ten-mile-long pipeline on the east bank and 15 miles on the west bank will bring fresh water from upriver to parish intakes.

The 12-inch diameter flexible pipeline would cost more than $12 million a month to operate

Saltwater moving up the river is expected to reach the parish this month.
