Paid parental leave will be available for Louisiana government employees starting next year.

The governor's office says state employees that are legal, foster, or adoptive parents can take up to 240 hours of leave in the first twelve weeks following their child's birth or placement.

It's part of an expansion of the state's time-off policy that was signed by Gov. John Bel Edwards on Thursday.

"By joining the 32 other states with paid parental leave policies, we are positioning ourselves to both attract and retain top talent in state," said Edwards. "I believe this policy is pro-life, and I hope to see the legislature adopt it statewide in the near future."

The state says new parents will be able to focus on bonding with their child and building their family without the financial worries of unpaid leave.
