A Republican state lawmaker says he will try to "expand the death penalty" in next year's legislative session.
State Senator Stewart Cathey Jr. of Monroe made the comment in an X post on Tuesday.
Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards publicly called for an end to capital punishment in Louisiana earlier this year.
Republican Governor-elect Jeff Landry is in favor of the death penalty.
With GOP majorities in both houses of the state Congress, Sen. Cathey's proposal may get some traction, though he hasn't given details as to what he has in mind.
