A Southwest Airlines flight returned to New Orleans International Airport following a bird strike on Wednesday.

Flight 554 was departing for Florida when the midair collision took place. The jet returned to the airport, landed normally, and taxied to a gate under its own power.

Southwest says it arranged for a new plane to carry the 164 affected travelers to their destination.

An airport spokesperson says the runways were briefly closed for debris cleanup.

Normal operations at the airport have since resumed.
